What can cause bad breath?

Just as there are various causes of bacteria in the mouth, there can also be multiple causes of bad breath. Some of these causes are:

  • Some foods

Your eating habits are directly linked to your oral health. Foods like garlic, cheese, and onions can cause bad breath. The breakdown of fat by your body can also release chemicals that may give your breath a bad odor.

  • Poor oral health care

If you are not cleaning your mouth properly and regularly enough, food particles may remain in your mouth. Brushing and flossing regularly,] is very important for dental health and hygiene. If food stays in your mouth, it may rot – which is essentially a breeding ground for bacteria. This can also cause an unpleasant odor.

  • Not cleaning properly

Dentures need to be adequately cleaned. Otherwise, there may be a buildup of plaque, bacteria, fungi, or remaining food particles. Thus, improper cleaning of dentures can also lead to bad breath.

  • Bacteria on the tongue that causes odor

Certain bacteria can react with the amino acids in your tongue and cause an unpleasant smell.

  • Xerostomia

Dry mouth is known as Xerostomia medically. This is a condition that can cause bad breath. If the saliva production is low, then the mouth cannot cleanse itself properly. There can be multiple causes of dry mouth.

  • Tobacco

Tobacco products are wrong for your overall health but especially bad for your oral health. Tobacco can stain your teeth and can also cause bad breath.

  • Underlying health conditions

Certain health conditions can also cause your mouth to develop an unpleasant smell.

How can I prevent bad breath?

There are some steps you can take to prevent bad breath. Some of these are:

  • Brush twice daily, once in the morning and once before going to bed.
  • Brush your teeth for at least two minutes.
